Inner Defense™: Supporting the Body When It Matters Most

Updated: Jan 21

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are not only 100% natural—they are 100% awesome. Many Young Living single oils and blends have been independently tested, including studies conducted by universities, to evaluate their efficacy. Young Living’s Seed to Seal® Standard is carefully maintained, resulting in creative and effective ways to use essential oils for both people and animals.

Why They Are Called “Essential”

Essential oils are called essential because the plant cannot live without them. The essential oils found naturally in vegetables and fruits contribute significantly to our health. These living molecules not only enhance life but also help defend the body.

Each distilled essential oil is a concentrated expression of a plant’s intelligence—offering its full potential to support and uplift us.

The Art and Science of Distillation

The distillation of essential oils in stainless-steel vats is both a science and an art. Pressure, temperature, and time are carefully regulated for each plant species, whether shrubs, flowers, trees, resins, or roots.

If these factors are not properly controlled, the result can be an inferior oil. Monitoring temperature and distillation time ensures each molecule is fully released and captured into glass containers. Proper distillation is key to unlocking the multiple health-supporting benefits of essential oils.

The Seed to Seal® Difference

For example, commercial cypress oil is often distilled for only two hours and fifteen minutes to reduce time and cost. In contrast, Young Living spends most of the day distilling and continuously monitoring and testing oil samples until they meet the strict Seed to Seal® Standard. Only then are the oils made available to members.

Gary Young’s Vision

Founder Gary Young understood how essential oils are delivered within the body. He recognized their ability to support balance, lift the spirits, and strengthen the body’s natural protective “force field.”

One of his most well-known formulations is Thieves®, a powerful blend rich in compounds such as thymol, carvacrol, and eugenol. This blend supports immune health and helps create an unfriendly environment for candida, yeast, mold, and fungi. Thieves® is often used during colds, flu, and respiratory challenges.

Essential Oils vs. Herbal Formulas

Essential oils do not work the same way as herbal formulas. Plants used for essential oils are harvested fresh from fields or forests and are never dehydrated or boiled. Because essential oils are highly concentrated, only a small amount is needed to support body systems and immune health.

Inner Defense™ Soft-Gels

Gary Young later encapsulated the Thieves® blend into a liquid soft-gel called Inner Defense™. These easy-to-swallow soft-gels dissolve quickly in the stomach for maximum effectiveness.

Key ingredients include:

  • Oregano

  • Thyme

  • Clove

  • Eucalyptus radiata

  • Cinnamon

  • Rosemary

  • Lemon

  • Citronella

The formula also includes fish oil and coconut oil. In Asian countries, beeswax is added.

When and How to Use Inner Defense™

The best time to begin using Inner Defense™ is at the first sign that you may be catching a cold or when your immune system feels compromised. Soft-gels may be taken one to five times daily, depending on whether they are used for maintenance or short-term support.

It is recommended to take Life 9™ Probiotics at least eight hours after using Inner Defense™, or to take probiotics regularly once you feel your system is back on track.
