The Healing Heritage of Basil: A Seasonal Spotlight

A Royal Herb With a Healing Legacy

There are many types of basil plants, commonly used for culinary purposes. But the basil selected by founder Gary Young (Ocimum basilicum) was chosen specifically for its therapeutic qualities.Young Living sources basil from India, France, and Utah, ensuring the highest purity from farm to bottle.

History & Sacred Traditions

The name basil comes from basilikon, the Greek word for “king.”Across Asia, basil has long been used for spiritual protection, often planted outside homes and temples as a symbol of safeguarding and blessing. It is a plant with a noble heritage—fitting for the reflective winter season.

Winter Wellness: Distillation & Benefits

At Young Living farms, basil is steam-distilled from the leaves, stems, and flowers. Its constituents provide powerful wellness support, including:

  • Antispasmodic

  • Antibacterial

  • Antiviral

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Muscle relaxant

Its fragrance is known to help lift mental fatigue and restore clarity—welcome support during the pace of the holiday season.

Seasonal Support for Body and Mind

Basil is recognized for helping ease:

  • Muscle tension and spasms

  • Migraines

  • Insect bites

  • Throat and lung discomfort

  • Mental exhaustion

Because basil’s chemotype changes depending on where it’s grown, each batch must be tested to meet Young Living’s Seed to Seal standard to ensure therapeutic consistency and purity.

Basil in the Raindrop Technique

In the Raindrop Technique, basil is applied to the spine and feet to support:

  • Muscles

  • Ligaments

  • Nervous system balance

Gary Young chose basil as a key component for spine and deep tissue support. Many people find it extremely useful during winter months for muscle tightness, yoga practice, and recovery after physical activity.
